On Mastering
Is digital recording better than analogue?
Fact is: most of recent music is recorded (and, of course, published) on digital media. On the other hand professional engineers tend to use as much analogue outboard equipment as possible. Analogue equipment offers warmth and certain "organic" characteristics.
Marten uses digital recording equipment. But mastering is done in both ways: digitally on CD and, for some albums, analogue on a reel to reel tape recorder.
Marten himself prefers the warm and saturated sound of tape. Of course, there is less dynamic, a little tape hiss and some tape echo here and there. On the other hand music on tape sounds obviously more three dimensional.
